Are We Underestimating WALL-E?

So I just glanced at the Chicago Film Critics winners. The usual: Mickey Rourke, Anne Hathaway, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet. It also declared WALL-E as Best Picture. I didn't think twice about it when I first saw, but then it occurred to me: just how many of these critic awards has "WALL-E" picked up? Three or four? That's pretty considerable. So why isn't anyone considering it for the top prize? I realize that it's animated, and that only one animated film has ever been nominated, and that the Animated Film category makes the chances of that ever happening again slim, but look at what it's achieved. I don't really think that it will be nominated; I just think that it's a contender. I know that there are always a few critical darlings that never get off the ground Oscar-wise, but very few films--animated or otherwise--can rack up the awards and critical acclaim that this flim has. Just something to consider.

Oh, and by the way, I thought this was one of the most overrated films of the year, so trust me, I'm not being biased.

Wanted

Notes: Langella, Penn and Rourke should be locks for the Oscar nominations. The remaining two spots should either go to Jenkins, Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio or Clint Eastwood unless somebody comes out of nowhere. Great pickup for Melissa Leo for Best Actress who will probably compete with Sally Hawkins and Kristin Scott Thomas for the Oscars. James Franco seems to have lost momentum as Dev Patel picks up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, so we'll see how that goes. Taraji P. Henson is back in the Best Supporting Actress race. This is shaping to be the category where anything goes, as Marisa Tomei, Rosemarie DeWitt and Debra Winger can still make a strong case in this race or even Elsa Zylberstein (these surprise nominations have happened before). Anyway, what do you think?

Visual Effects Contenders

Here are the 15 films which will compete for the Visual Effects category:

Australia
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Cloverfield
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Hancock
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Incredible Hulk
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Quantum of Solace
The Spiderwick Chronicles

Of these 15, which do you think will be the three contenders?

It's Official!

According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have made an offer to Hugh Jackman to host the Oscars in February. A very interesting choice since comics have taken the stand as of late, but he has won an Emmy for hosting the Tony Awards in 2005 so it will be fun to see the World's Sexiest Man of 2008 trying to make us laugh. What do you think?

Notes: Finally, Revolutionary Road makes its way on the map picking up for Picture, Actor & Actress and Director. Benjamin Button, Doubt and Frost/Nixon lead the way with 5 nominations each so they could be favorites for Best Picture for the Oscars. No surprises in the lead acting categories for Drama. It's amazing to see both Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson going for Best Actor in a Comedy, but none more surprising than James Franco! Not only does he get a nom for one of the funniest comedies of the year, he gets snubbed, along with Josh Brolin in the supporting category for Milk, arguably the best film of the year, for Best Picture and Gus Van Sant for Director, so we'll have to wait for the Guild Awards (Producers, Directors and Screen Actors) to see if this was just what we can always expect from the Globes. Tom Cruise picking up a supporting nom is surprising, but not without merit as the greatest 'cameo' of the year by far. I was wrong by not picking Penelope Cruz in my predictions, and someone suggested I remove one of the actresses from Doubt to make room for her; turns out I was right about that one though, as neither Rosemarie DeWitt or Debra Winger make it for Rachel Getting Married. We also must note the absence of probably the early favorite, Taraji P. Henson, for Benjamin Button, but this wouldn't be the first time an actor goes to the Oscars without being nominated at the Globes. We'll have to wait for the DGA and the PGA to see if The Dark Knight and Christopher Nolan will make the shortlist this year, because the Globes didn't help. A surprising miss is The Class, absent from the Foreign Language category, but I'm sure we'll see it at the Oscars. What do you think?

Notes : WALL-E winning Best Picture, could this up its chances for a Best Picture nod? Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke seem like the clear frontrunners vying for Best Actor. Happy-Go-Lucky is the clear winner of this ceremony, but it will take much more than this for a boost come Oscar time. Kudos for The Dark Knight, also gaining extra points for its Best Picture contention. What do you think?

We finally have a list for some songs which will compete at this year's Oscars. Kate Beckinsale and Vera Farmiga enter the mix for the acting categories for Nothing But the Truth so we'll see how they fare. Melissa Leo and Richard Jenkins stay in the races (deservedly so). Notice once again the complete absence of Revolutionary Road, and not even making it for Best Picture from the critics, its chances might be slipping away, but it's still a long way to the nominations. What do you think?

Dark Knight chances?

As most of you may be aware by now, Warner Bros. have made plans to re-release The Dark Knight in theaters on January 23rd, one day after the announcement of the nominations for this year's race. Of course, the main reason in to reach the $1 billion dollar mark at the domestic and international box-office (it only needs $3.5 million to do so). With the DVD release today, it will be hard to convince people, but you never know. It has also been announced, according to Variety, that the film's score by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard had its disqualification revoked so it is admissible for a nomination, so that is very good news for the film trying to get a Best Picture nom. Good luck!

Top 5 Documentary Films:

Big Winners: Clint Eastwood and Gran Torino will definitely get major buzz after winning for Best Actor and Original Screenplay. This will cause some interesting races in those categories, and Clint might yet again slip in for Best Director. David Fincher beats Gus Van Sant, the early favorite, so the Best Director race will be very interesting this year. Could Josh Brolin make the list instead of James Franco in the supporting category or will we see both? Penelope Cruz regains some much needed buzz to keep going in the race. The Dark Knight makes the top 10 so it will still gun for Best Picture.

Big Loser: Revolutionary Road goes unnoticed here, not even making the top 10, so it will be interesting to see how this affects its chances down the road.

Awards season is officially underway! What do you think?

National Board of Review Predictions

Today is the day that the Oscar season will officially (not to discount the Spirits...) begin. With the National Board of Review winners comes that undeniable sense of continual buzz that cannot be ignored. In the coming weeks, more and more critics' awards will be handed out and with each one more and more anticipation for the official nominations and then the winners. I won't say anything else so here are my predictions for this year's National Board of Review (excluding independent, foreign, and documentary...I regret to say that I would not even know where to begin with those except hopefully In Bruges will be one of them). Here we go.

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Best Director: Gus Van Sant, Milk
Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Best Actress: Melissa Leo, Frozen River
Best Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt, Burn After Reading
Best Supporting Actress: Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Best Original Screenplay: Thomas McCarthy, The Visitor
Best Adapted Screenplay: Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Best Foreign Language Film: The Class
Best Animated Film: WALL-E
Best Documentary Feature: Man on Wire
Best Ensemble: Milk
Best Breakthrough Actor (Male): James Franco, Milk
Best Breakthrough Actor (Female): Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky

Top Ten (in alphabetical order):
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
Milk
Revolutionary Road
Tropic Thunder
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
The Visitor
WALL-E

I threw in a couple of oddball picks just to keep it interesting. Last year the winner of the NBR wasn't included in the Top Ten, so I followed that similar trend. What are your predictions for the awards tonight?

A couple of things to notice here. First, Marisa Tomei does not get a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, so that might hurt her chances for an Oscar nom. Points for Debra Winger and Rosemarie DeWitt (although a split between the two might end up hurting them both). Next, it will be interesting to see if either Sean Penn or Mickey Rourke wins to establish perhaps a favorite come Oscar night, and look out for Richard Jenkins. Anne Hathaway seems a lock for Best Actress, but she might need a win to keep momentum going. Milk not nominated for Best Picture and Gus Van Sant as Best Director might raise a few eyebrows as well. It also seems that James Franco will be favored over Josh Brolin in the supporting category, but who knows? We also find a couple of favorites in the Documentary category, with Herzog's Encounters and James Marsh's Man on Wire. In the Foreign Language category, The Class will be a strong contender coming off a Palme d'Or win. What do you think?

Che Trailer

It looks like it will be released in LA and NY in time for Oscar contention but it will be released widely in two parts on January 9th, so look for Benicio Del Toro to make a run for an Oscar nomination... What do you think?
