Shrek the Third: Will the Reviews Hurt its Success?

With a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 57/100 on MetaCritic, will the reviews hurt Shrek the Third? Well, this is probably the least anticipated of all the three-quels coming out this year. While kids will undoubtedly be seeing this, people age 12 and up may be a little hesitant about making an event to see the film. We'll see soon enough...

At my theater last night they canceled other showings of movies to make room for more Shrek. Most of the audience was older than 15. But I don't know how I feel, the film felt very "that was it?" and short, but it was the longest of the three.

Really? Are you kidding me? It made $38mil Friday. Probably won't be as big as the second one, but still do incredibly well. It's Shrek! What else can you expect!

Yeah...I'm thinking it'll make around the $150 million range in the US. I do adore Shrek and I'll be seeing this for sure, but I dunno. I guess I'm a little skeptical (sp?).

Do you mean total gross? Because if you do you are wrong, it will make 150 in its opening weekend alone. Animated movies, unlike most movies, usually do better on Saturday and Sunday than on Friday. Shrek 2 opened on a Wednesday and made nearly $21 million in its first two days and another $28.3 million on its first Friday. It ended up making $108 million in its first three-day weekend, roughly 3.8 times its first Friday. If Shrek the Third were to match that multiple, it would wind up with more than $150 million for the weekend, but chances are that it will be a bit more "frontloaded" to Friday without Wednesday and Thursday showings, so it will probably wind up somewhere between $125 and 135 million for the three-day weekend.
