BSFC Winners

For those of you who didn't already know, the Boston Society Film Critics announced their winners periodically over the last hour or so. My apologies for the miscommunication regarding the date of these awards.

The winners:

Best Picture: No Country for Old Men
Best Actor:
Frank Langella, Starting Out in the Evening
Best Actress:
Marion Cottilard, La Vie en Rose
Best Supporting Actor
: Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
Best Director: Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Best Screenplay
: Brad Bird, Ratatouille
Best Documentary: Crazy Love
Best Cinematography
: Janusz Kaminski, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Best New Filmmaker: Ben Affleck, Gone Baby Gone
Best Foreign Language Film: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Best Ensemble Cast: Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

I made comments after each update and I'll just combine them here. Amy Ryan may be the critics' darling of the year...we'll wait and see if the LAFCA agrees later today. Marion Cottilard's win was nice since she didn't win the NBR. Bardem's win was pretty predictable, but then again, so was Cottilard's. Frank Langella's win was something I was, personally, very excited about. It complicates Best Actor, which is nice. Like Ryan, we'll see if more groups continue to reward Langella. But for now, that was a nice buzz boost. Julian Schnabel's win helps with the chance of a nomination. These awards were, for the most part, pretty standard and what I think the rest of the lists will look like. It would be very interesting if No Country for Old Men pulls a Helen Mirren and wins all the Best Picture critics, guilds, and, of course, the Oscar. Can it be done? The race continues...

Marion Cotillard deserves the BEST ACTRESS win.
