The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Asks Not to be Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film

Look at this FYC ad:

"And in all applicable categories except Best Foreign Language Film."

That's kind of a strange choice, but I can see why they would make it. I can see the Academy giving it a Foreign Film win instead of a Picture nomination. It's actually a pretty smart move, if you ask me. God, I want to see this movie.

Does that mean La Vie En Rose is France's submission?

I think it's both smart and also a bad move. On one hand, this means it can only be nominated for Best Picture and not Best Foreign Language in terms of it winning a Best Film award. On the other, it seems like a terribly arrogant thing to do and the Academy might think that as well.

No, Persepolis is France's selection.

It wasn't selected as France's foreign language selection, yet it's winning all kinds of critics awards for best foreign film. They just don't want to cause any confusion amongst Academy members. There's nothing arrogant about it.

Oh, right, I forgot that Persepolis was their entry.

I believe that Diving Bell was not eligible for the Oscars Best Foreign Language category. The director is American. And he's been getting director nods already.

This film is wonderful. If it weren't for the foreign language it would be a shoo-in for Best Picture. It's a beautiful, moving film, and despite its sad subject matter it isn't depressing. I walked out of the theater feeling uplifted. The language is its only obstacle.

Max von Sydow is in only two scenes and he is wonderful. I highly recommend this film. It's one of my favorites of the year so far.
