The five nominees are:
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Sean Penn, Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
These are all fantastic choices. Brian and I both got 3/5 (we both had the same three, different other two, wrong, choices). What this means: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly's direction, and the film itself, was so good that it received enough votes in a matter of about a week (DGA envelopes were sent in early December; Diving Bell was released November 30...in a limited run). This builds its buzz for sure. I don't think Gilroy's nomination particularly locks him in for an Academy Award nomination but it's good to see he got some recognition. I think Burton is probably out now (sadly) and if you took out Gilroy and replaced him with Joe Wright, you'd be looking at the most likely lineup for this year's Best Director.
